How Ground Source Heat Pumps operate to reduce energy costs

Ground source heat pumps work by using the heat stored in the earth that has been gathered from the suns radiant heat. Heat Pumps are now a real alternative to conventional heating, there is conflicting advise out there so it is critical you gain advise from experianced installers, our experiance of installing gives you real life answers.

This heat is harvested from the ground by typically a closed loop system, the pipes are installed in the ground in either trenches or if the installation requires boreholes.

Natural Warmth can design and install a ground source system for almost any property type and any hot water demand, individual heat pumps can be from 8kw to 60kw. They can heat and cool buildings.

The design of the ground collectors is a critical part of the system design. When pipes are in trenches they need to be at least 1m down and 1m apart. Natural Warmth do agree with “slinky” systems due to the grounds ability to replenish the heat taken from it. With boreholes typically the depth required can be between 70 and 190 metres.  Drilling a borehole needs to be carried out by a specialist contractor and may require permissions depending on local conditions e.g. mine workings, tunnels etc. It tends to be more expensive than the surface ground collector.  A borehole requires little ground area and is suited to smaller plots and where a heat pump is replacing an existing fossil fuel boiler.
